ONRAMP #4, Another Fine Mess: Book Launch & Reception

Friday, February 7, 7pm
SCI-Arc Library

Join SCI-Arc design faculty Marcelyn Gow and Florencia Pita for a reception and book launch for the 4th edition of ONRAMP, Another Fine Mess, a publication of select undergraduate and graduate student work from 2012-2013.

When students at SCI-Arc embark on their education as architects and delve into projects exploring what that means, they begin a journey into the unknown. This book is a way for the public to join them on at least part of the trip. And as readers explore the work in this book, they will find that there are many roads taken at SCI-Arc. But none the usual route.

The Library is located on the 2nd floor at the north end of the SCI-Arc building.

Pita & Bloom, A Next Generation Partnership

A new design partnership forged by SCI-Arc faculty Florencia Pita and Jackilin Hah Bloom is featured in the January issue of Architect Magazine. “What’s striking about Pita & Bloom is that it’s a partnership of two female visionaries reaching for the highest, riskiest ground in the profession,” writes Architect’s Karrie Jacobs in the magazine's Next Progressives column.

Pita+Bloom designed "Balloon Frame" for the MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program 2014

Having worked together in the office of Greg Lynn, the two designers collaborated previously on projects large and small, including product design and an entry to the 2002 World Trade Center competition. But it was their common interest in applying photographic images and patterns to tiles and other forms of cladding that led them to join forces in 2010 and launch into a full-time collaboration.

Last year, the two designers completed a competition entry for Taichung City Cultural Center in Taiwan, in which they used a graphic of the national Taiwanese flower to carpet the building’s undulating roof. This year, they made the shortlist for the Young Architects Program at Museum of Modern Art PS1 with their colorful “Balloon Frame,” a proposal echoing contemporary pop culture, local street art and the vivid perceptual experiences of watching parade balloons.
