Ryohei Koike (B.Arch ‘10) and Jarod Poenisch (B.Arch ‘10) of SCI-Arc were awarded third prize in the 2010 Skyscraper Competition organized by eVolo magazine. The award seeks to discover young talents whose ideas will change the way we understand architecture and its relationship with the natural and built environments.
Three winning projects and 27 special mentions were selected by the competition jury from a pool of 430 entries from 42 countries. Descriptions of the winning projects will be published in the forthcoming spring issue of eVolo.
The project by Koike and Poenisch, Nested Skyscraper in Tokyo (shown below), explores robotic construction techniques for a novel structure of carbon sleeves and fiber-laced concrete. Their skyscraper advances a system of multiple layers of composite louvers which thicken and rotate according to solar exposure, ventilation and materials performance.
Koike and Poenisch, who will graduate from SCI-Arc this spring, initially developed the skyscraper project for the XLAB design studio at SCI-Arc, taught by Peter Testa. The vertical studio focuses on exploring robotic construction and computational materials as the basis for a new architectural language.
Established in 2006, the annual architecture competition hosted by eVolo recognizes outstanding ideas that redefine skyscraper design through the use of new technologies, materials, programs, aesthetics, and spatial organization.
