Folonis Wins Two Awards for the UCLA Surgery Center

The 45,000 square-foot UCLA Surgery and Oncology Center designed by Michael W. Folonis Architects, the practice of SCI-Arc faculty member and alum Michael Folonis (B.Arch '79), has received the 2010 AIA NEXT LA and the Westside Urban Forum Merit awards. The medical center, scheduled to be completed in August 2011, will be the first Gold LEED-rated outpatient surgery and oncology medical building in the United States.

Considering patient experience above all else, the building features an interior atrium and other design elements to promote healing. Patients receiving chemotherapy in the new center will be seating on either side of a glass-enclosed garden with views into the green space, where natural light will pour down from a sky opening.

Another innovative design feature is the first fully automated parking system in Southern California. Half the footprint of a standard garage, the medical center's parking system will reduce overall energy consumption and be more cost effective per space, by mechanically stacking vehicles close together and eliminating the need for drive aisles, ramps, stairs, elevators, ventilation and lighting.

Michael Folonis has more than 25 years of experience in design, programming, construction and management, and founded his own firm in 1983, where he leads every project from conceptual design to full realization.
