SCI-Arc Director and faculty member Eric Owen Moss, principal of Culver-City based Eric Owen Moss Architects, will lecture at an international Architecture & Education symposium taking place in Paris on Friday, May 7. The event—Not Just Education, Enthusiasm!—is hosted by École Spéciale d’Architecture and moderated by Sir Peter Cook.
Introduction by Peter Cook, architect, founder of Archigram and former professor and chair of the Bartlett School of Architecture at University College London:
Usually we discuss architectural education from the point of view of the school, the profession, the curriculum, culture/technology/theory/architectural mannerism. Now let’s reverse the direction of the process!
Why don’t we look at the architect as a person?
The conference invites to speak only teachers who really know how to inspire people.
We should discuss inspiration, enthusiasm, the joy of architecture, the psychological tricks involved in getting good work. We should not be afraid if the conclusions of the conference suggest a radical rethink of comfortable traditions of pedagogy.
The presentation by Eric Owen Moss is scheduled at 4:15 pm.
Presenters include: Odile Decq, executive director of École Spéciale d’Architecture; Hans Hollein, architect, designer and former Dean of the Architecture Department of Applied Arts in Vienna; Amancio Pancho Guedes, architect, professor and former Dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa; Bernard Tschumi, architect, professor and former Dean of the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University; and Jay Chatterjee, architect, professor and former Dean of the College of DAAP at the University of Cincinnati.
