| The 5,000-square-foot fabrication shop at SCI-Arc plays an integral role in student work, supporting hands-on experimentation with materials and construction. The shop is equipped with state of the art computer controlled (CNC) machines, including laser cutters, 3-axis milling machines, a plasma cutter, powder and plastic 3D printers and a plastics vacuum-former.
Additionally, the shop houses a wide array of traditional metal and woodworking machinery and tools, including new multi-use drill presses and table saws with the latest safety features. The facility enables and encourages innovation with materials including wood, metals, plastics and concrete and allows for the creation and assembly of substantial projects. The shop is staffed with experts who instruct and guide students in the use of the equipment so they can bring their projects to life, from model making to full-size construction of furniture and architectural elements. The shop has space for outdoor work year-round as needed. While primarily for student use, it is open to faculty and alumni depending on availability. |
