Milan Program: Design is ONE
Open to SCI-Arc AlumniFrom Products to Fashion Design: Macro Trends Architecture Cannot Ignore
May 2nd – May 16th, 2010
Organized by the Southern California Institute of Architecture, this 2-weeks field trip is open to students of architecture and professional architects interested in Italian Design.
The seminar is lead by SCI-Arc design faculty members Elena Manferdini and Ilaria Mazzoleni.
The class will research history, technical advancements, macro-trends, material and aesthetic properties common to architectural, industrial and fashion design. Participants will focus on understanding these disciplines within their historical and geographical context and discuss this interaction from a systemic and social perspective: participants will follow the development of design fields through a series of site visits to world leading Italian design factories (Cassina, Kartell, Ferrari, Ducati), designer studios (Mario Bellini, Piero Lissoni, Alessandro Mendini, Cini Boeri, Dolce e Gabbana) and cities (Milan, Bologna, Como) that shaped the design field at large in the past centuries.
Participants will travel to Milan, Italy from May 2nd to May 16th, 2010.

A 1200$ down-payment is due by February 15th. This down-payment will be used to cover the costs for accommodation (Milan Youth Hostel International or equivalent), entry to the Museums, tickets for La Scala and local transportation.

Main Event 8: Casino Night Fundraiser
Thursday, Nov 5, 2009, 7-11pm
Inner-City Arts, 720 Kohler Street, Los Angeles, CA 90021This annual event is the Alumni Association's signature fundraiser that benefits student scholarships and outreach activities, while strengthening the link between SCI-Arc, its alumni and the community at large.
Guests are invited to enjoy an evening of gaming at the casino-themed celebration. Revelers will bid on renderings from prominent designers and architects, as part of the event's silent auction, which will also include classic items such as trips, hotel stays, restaurant gift certificates and more.
This fantastic evening will also feature an installation by SCI-Arc alumni, savory food, premium beverages, music, dancing and fun.

Alumni Jennifer Siegal (M. Arch '94) and Barbara Bestor (M. Arch '92) will be given this year's Distinguished Alumni Award - the highest honor bestowed by the Alumni Association and the school to alumni who have made significant contributions to the design and architecture professions. Bestor is principal of Bestor Architecture. Siegal is principal and founder of Office of Mobile Design.
