Organized as a series of field trips, rather than typical academic seminars, Design is One follows the development of design fields through a series of site visits to world leading Italian and American designer studios in two cities that have shaped the design field at large in the past century—Los Angeles and Milan.

In the first week of the program, students visit several design practices in Los Angeles, conducting interviews with renowned architects. The following 2 weeks are spent in Italy, where students get to meet and interview leading Italian architects. Upon returning to Los Angeles, a monographic publication of the course is produced with the help of the two course instructors.

The seminar's goal is to define the role of design in the making of the city as the propelling economical and cultural force for new urban developments. Students research contemporary Milan through a historical analysis of the city. They examine the development of the city on a national and international level via its architectural, economic and cultural developments.
