2023 UG Thesis Students Transmute Cultural Themes into Vibrant Architectural Projects

SCI-Arc is proud to announce its 2023 Undergraduate Thesis Reviews, taking place on campus April 23, 2023. The fifth-year B.Arch students, under the guidance of Undergraduate Thesis Coordinator Maxi Spina, will present projects completed during their final year, throughout an immersive, in-person Undergraduate Thesis event.

Each year, UG Thesis prepares fifth-year B.Arch students to articulate, propose, and defend their ideas and positions on architecture as well as engage with professionals as peers and colleagues.  A public platform during which over 70 jurors, critics, and architecture professionals converge to discuss, debate, and dispute emerging questions in architecture, UG Thesis at SCI-Arc has been—since its founding—an integral element to the school’s pedagogy, celebrating the remarkable accomplishments and ingenuity of the graduating class.

Topics students inquired into through their thesis projects this year represent a vibrant cross section of the cultural moment—from the design of architecture for the neurodiverse to waste remediation of buildings to the idea of campuses as sites of democratic and experimental pedagogy. This year’s thesis class uniquely highlights the discipline’s efforts to deepen its agency and entanglement with contemporary issues.

“Thesis offers students both an ending and a beginning,” explains Spina. “For some, this milestone represents a culmination of five years of an intensive design pursuit. For others, their thesis project offers a rich field to unfold questions that become future pursuits—it may also be both.”

Join us on April 22 at SCI-Arc to celebrate the boundary-pushing work of SCI-Arc’s 2023 Undergraduate Thesis class.
