SCI-Arc faculty Ramiro Diaz Granados on Reconnecting Academia and Practice

SCI-Arc faculty member Ramiro Diaz Granados has published an essay in the September/October 2026 issue of The Architect's Newspaper. Featured on the cover under the heading "Fixing Academia and Practice," "Bridging the Divide: How to Rethink the Discipline of Architecture to Reconnect Academia and Practice" examines the structural forces that have driven architecture schools and professional practice apart. The essay argues that three converging forces — the research ideal, ideological capture, and commercialization — have displaced architecture's disciplinary core: the set of irreducible questions that the discipline alone is positioned to ask. It proposes reconstructing that core around six foundational questions shared by both practice and teaching, and argues for a curriculum built on resonance with professional realities rather than resemblance to them.
