Independent Architecture Critic

Matt Shaw is a New York–based author, editor and columnist, whose work focuses on architecture, art and design as instruments of political, social and cultural shifts. He is the author of American Modern: Architecture, Community, Columbus, Indiana (Monacelli, 2024), a comprehensive urban history of one of America’s most important small towns. He has been published in The New York Times, The Guardian, PIN-UP, Artforum, Spike, The Architectural Review, and Domus. Previously, he was the executive editor of Architect’s Newspaper from 2015 to 2020, during which time the publication was given an honorable mention for digital criticism by the International Committee of Architectural Critics (CICA). Shaw is currently the Distinguished Visiting Professor of Practice at the University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture and also teaches critical writing and media studies at UPenn, The Cooper Union, NJIT and SCI-Arc.
