B.Arch Program

  1. Design Thinking and Core Knowledge
    1. Students will demonstrate core competencies in the field of architecture attained through a liberal arts-based curriculum. Students will demonstrate proficiency in architectural design, an understanding of architecture and design culture, and knowledge of the history and theory of architecture.
    2. Students will develop architectural projects at various scales of resolution that advance a high degree of design and technical expertise coupled with critical thinking.
    3. Students will demonstrate an understanding of contemporary architectural discourse and how their design work is situated within the broader field of architecture.
  2. Critical Thinking, Research, and Reflection
    1. Students participate in studio culture and engage in collaborative as well as individual design work and research advised by studio and seminar faculty.
    2. Through core seminars in the Liberal Arts, Visual Studies, History + Theory, and Applied Studies, students will be proficient in a range of research methods and demonstrate competency in critical thinking in the context of architecture and related design fields.
    3. Through a range of elective seminar offerings, students will demonstrate competency in specialized subject matter and topics that enhance their core education.
  3. Approach to Technology and Making
    1. Students will demonstrate competencies in both analog and digital modes of making and apply these skills to a range of architectural problems on different scales.
    2. Students will have aptitude with contemporary technologies in relation to fabrication, building systems, tectonics, visualization and spatial simulation.
    3. Students will demonstrate an understanding of how the application of specific technologies and platforms impact the designs they produce.
  4. Communication Skills and Active Public Engagement
    1. Students will demonstrate proficiency in writing, oral argumentation, and visual communication to present a concept and position in front of an audience.
    2. Students will work collaboratively and develop leadership skills in the context of both group and individual project work.
    3. Students will demonstrate architectural values and an awareness of how their design work is situated in social and cultural contexts.
  5. Environmental Stewardship, Professional Responsibility, and DEI
    1. Students will demonstrate ecological knowledge and awareness of the impact their design work has on the natural environment and on public health, safety, and welfare. Students will act ethically and responsibly as future architecture professionals.
    2. Students will value fairness, diversity, and social justice in the profession and in society, and commit to equity and inclusion in the environments they design and the policies they adopt.
