How We Work

SCI-Arc is a school where thinking and making are interdependent, and where experimentation is not supplemental to studio life, but fundamental to it. This culture is shaped not only through curriculum, but through the school's unique physical environment. Students work within an open studio setting where each is provided a dedicated personal workspace that serves as both a site for learning and creative production. Accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the studio becomes an extension of the educational experience—one that students shape, personalize, and inhabit alongside their peers.

SCI-Arc embraces a wide range of tools, techniques, and resources that support the integration of multiple modes of thought and production. While grounded in a strong lineage of curricular continuity, the school remains highly responsive to shifting cultural contexts, evolving its understanding of architecture and design culture. This is most evident in its studios, where contemporary issues are engaged with immediacy and understood within a historical context, using design to think critically and act within an ever-changing world.

Fundamentally, students are co-creators of a dynamic studio culture and active participants in shaping both their educational experience and their shared environment. Learning extends beyond formal class time; it occurs through daily interactions, observation, collaboration, and exchange among peers. By working alongside one another in a collective studio setting, students contribute to a culture of curiosity, experimentation, and mutual learning that is central to the SCI-Arc experience.

Collaboration, Conversation and Feedback

SCI-Arc promotes a dynamic culture of collaboration between students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visiting practitioners, where dialogue drives ideas forward. Field trips, site visits, lectures, exhibitions, and encounters with practices and institutions outside of the studio are central to this approach, bringing students into direct contact with the landscapes, systems, and ideas that shape our shared environments.

Similarly, critique is approached as a supportive and collaborative process. Reviews bring together faculty, visiting jurors, students, and broader audiences, creating opportunities to engage with diverse perspectives and refine ideas through conversation. Rather than functioning as one-directional evaluations, reviews foster an ongoing exchange in which feedback builds momentum, sustains enthusiasm, and encourages critical inquiry.

While SCI-Arc encourages creative freedom, studio culture also depends upon communal responsibility and active participation. Students are encouraged to engage in committees, leadership opportunities, and school initiatives that contribute to the life of the institution. Through shared governance, mutual respect, and collective support, members of the SCI-Arc community help shape the culture.

Studio Environment, Etiquette, and Expectations

SCI-Arc promotes an active studio environment where the following values are present and honored:

Intellectual Diversity

SCI-Arc is continually shaped by the wide range of perspectives, research interests, and intellectual approaches brought by its faculty, students, alumni, and visiting practitioners. Within this context, creative and critical engagement is an essential expectation for all. A broad spectrum of viewpoints, including those in productive tension with one another, is actively supported, contributing to SCI-Arc's role as a center for critical design discourse. The community benefits from a culture defined by openness, experimentation, inquiry, and calculated risk.

Faculty are charged with developing original curricula informed by their research and areas of expertise, fostering an environment where diverse approaches to architecture and design can be explored and debated. This culture of intellectual exchange is reflected throughout the curriculum, culminating in thesis work that enables students to pursue focused lines of inquiry and contribute to ongoing disciplinary conversations. SCI-Arc also maintains a robust portfolio culture through which students continuously present, evaluate, and refine their work.

Community Engagement

At SCI-Arc, community extends well beyond the studio, shaping and permeating every aspect of the school’s culture. Regular touchpoints such as public lectures, book launches, and gallery and library exhibitions create space for ongoing exchange among students, faculty, staff, and the public. School-wide community events including the annual Career Fair: Open Studio and Spring Show reinforce a culture of shared engagement. In addition, SCI-Arc cultivates connections across diverse communities through initiatives such as Study Abroad and Design Immersion Days which introduce high school students to architectural thinking and expands access to design education.

Located in downtown Los Angeles’ Arts District, SCI-Arc immerses students in a dynamic urban environment shaped by public forums, competitions, and ongoing conversations about the past, present and future of the city. SCI-Arc further strengthens its role within a broader civic and professional network through ongoing partnerships with organizations such as LAUSD, AIA, AWA+D, ACLA, LA Forum, ICA, and Inner-City Arts.
