Pay Scale: $25.00 per hour
Hours: Saturdays and Sundays: 10:00AM-7:00PM
Additional weekday/weeknight initial training shifts
(as needed, up to 4 weeks)
Analog Fabrication Specialist (PT)
Within a creative academic environment, the Analog Fabrication Specialist will work closely with the Fabrication Shop Manager, Shop staff, student staff and temporary staff assisting students and faculty attain success in realizing the physical manifestation of their designs and ideas.
The Analog Fabrication Specialist will have experience using and maintaining conventional Wood and Metal-working equipment. Specialist will be responsible for advising and training Shop users in the safest and most efficient use of fabrication equipment. Specialist will have demonstrable experience with plaster/resin casting; mold-making; basic concrete work, and the ability to instruct students, faculty, and staff in the successful application of these processes in their coursework and research. The Analog Fabrication Specialist will be capable of assisting with medium-scale construction methodology; gallery installation techniques; furniture design/building. The ideal candidate will be equally comfortable and productive working as part of a team or completing projects independently.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Training of all Shop users and staff in the safe and proper use of Fabrication Shop equipment, to include woodworking/metalworking tools and equipment; Thermal-Forming equipment; welding equipment
- Troubleshooting/Repair/Maintenance of equipment and tools
- Assist in evaluation and implementation of equipment
- Assist in creating and updating safety documentation
- Assist in updating Shop usage policies
- Train new and existing staff, including temporary workers
- Supervision/Training of student workers
- Occasionally act as lead-person for a team of 2-6 workers
- Advise and assist Shop users in the planning/scheduling/completion of their projects
- Assist/advise students, faculty, staff regarding material selection/handling/disposal
- Advise and assist students/faculty/staff/exhibitors to complete gallery installations
- Work with staff/students/faculty to complete construction of furniture, fixtures, jigs for Shop and campus use
- Develop/Present student tutorials, online and in-person
- Use/Application of MS Teams platform
- Enforcement of Shop policies and protocols
- Maintain a clean Shop environment
- Tool circulation and tracking
- Must be able to work occasional weekdays/weeknights as needed beyond regularly scheduled hours up to (30) hours per week
- Perform related duties based on departmental need
Qualifications:
- Minimum (4) years general woodworking experience, using standard saws/jointers/planers/shapers/sanders/drill press/etc.
- General metalworking and welding experience, using standard saws/grinders/brakes/benders/MIG welders/etc. preferred
- Minimum (2) years plaster/resin casting and mold-making experience
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite/MS Teams/Outlook
- Some experience with Digital fabrication equipment (3D Printers/Laser Cutters/Router Mills) a plus
- Some experience with Rhino/Adobe Illustrator a plus
- Experience in an Academic setting preferred
Other Requirements:
- Must be comfortable wearing appropriate respiratory equipment for work in an environment where dust and fumes are present, along with any other required PPE (face shields/goggles/protective clothing/hearing protection/etc.)
- Must possess ability to safely perform the physical work required of all duties, including manual dexterity, agility, strength, and coordination
- Occasionally: sit, crouch/squat, climb, power grasping
- Deliver excellent student service and maintain clarity and composure when faced with difficult situations
- Frequently: stand, walk, bend, reach above shoulder level, use of keyboard/mouse, moderate to heavy unassisted lifting (up to 50 lbs.) heavy assisted lifting (more than 50 lbs.); hand dexterity, hand twisting, simple grasping, moderate to heavy assisted & unassisted pushing/pulling; assisting with relocation of machinery, exposure to outdoor work environment
