Summary:
The Analog Fabrication Technician is an entry level position responsible for assisting students, faculty and staff in the completion of coursework and research using all Fabrication Shop wood and metal-working equipment. Technicians will work directly with Analog Fabrication Specialists under the direction of the Fabrication Shop Manager.
With an eye towards safety, Technicians will provide support to students and faculty in the completion of physical models and projects. Technicians will also assist with gallery installations, jig/fixture design and fabrication, and various campus build projects and repairs. The Analog Fabrication Technician is responsible for helping maintain a clean, organized, and efficient workspace.
The SCI-Arc Fabrication Shop is a creative workspace where students and staff can grow their skills and knowledge.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Advise Shop users in the safe and proper use of wood/metal-working tools and equipment
- Work with shop staff, students and faculty to complete the construction of furniture, fixtures, jigs for the Shop and campus use
- Enforce shop policies and protocols
- Aid in the supervision/training of student workers
- Aid in the repair and maintenance of tools and equipment
- Maintaining a clean shop environment
- Tool circulation and inventory tracking
- Use/application of MS Teams platform
- Assist/support Fabrication Specialist in MIG welding practices
- Work with shop staff, students and faculty to complete the construction of furniture, fixtures, jigs for the Shop and campus use
- Other tasks, as assigned
Qualifications:
- 2 years, general woodworking experience using standard saws, jointers, planers, shapers, sanders, etc.
- 1-year, general metalworking/MIG welding experience using saws, grinders, brakes and benders, etc.
- Familiarity with Thermal-forming, Mold-making, Plaster Casting and Material Finishing preferred
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience in an Academic setting preferred.
Other Requirements:
- Must be comfortable wearing appropriate respiratory equipment for work in an environment where dust and fumes are present, along with any other required PPE (face shields/goggles/protective clothing/etc.)
- Must possess ability to safely perform the physical work required of all duties, including manual dexterity, agility, strength, and coordination
- Frequently: stand, walk, bend, reach above shoulder level, use of keyboard/mouse, light lifting (up to 25 lbs.), hand dexterity, simple grasping, light pushing / pulling; moderate assisted/unassisted lifting; moderate pushing / pulling; exposure to outdoor work environments
- Occasionally: sit, crouch/squat, climb, power grasping, assisting in relocation of machinery
- Must be able to work occasional weekdays/weeknights as needed beyond regularly scheduled hours up to (30) hours per week
- Deliver excellent student service and maintain clarity and composure when faced with difficult situations
- Perform related duties based on departmental need
