Summary:
Within a creative academic environment, the Digital Fabrication Technician will work closely with Digital Fabrication Specialists and report to the Fabrication Shop Manager. The Technician will assist students and faculty in realizing the physical manifestation of their designs and ideas.
The Digital Fabrication Technician should have experience using all Digital fabrication equipment (CNC Mills/3D Printers/CNC Laser Cutters/3D Scanners) to complete assigned projects and should be comfortable assisting students and faculty in using this equipment to complete coursework and research. Technicians will also assist with gallery installations, jig/fixture design and fabrication, and various campus build projects and repairs. The Digital Fabrication Technician is responsible for helping maintain a clean, organized, and efficient workspace.
The SCI-Arc Fabrication Shop is a creative workspace where students and staff can grow their skills and knowledge.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in the supervision of 3D Printing operations, Laser cutting operations, CNC Router Mill operations and 3D Scanning operations
- Process and troubleshoot digital files
- 3 & 4-axis CNC router mill programming/setup/operation
- Create/modify digital files in the furtherance of Shop projects/initiatives
- Assist Shop users in the planning/scheduling/completion of their projects
- Use/Application of MS Teams platform
- Complete assignments to meet Shop and Campus needs
- Assist with campus Gallery installations
- Enforce Shop policies and protocols
- Assist in training regular/temp staff
- Assist in the training and supervision of student workers
- Complete data entry for job tracking and management
- Assist with repair and maintenance of equipment/infrastructure tools
- Maintain a clean Shop environment
- Assist with tool circulation and inventory tracking
- Must be able to work occasional weekdays/weeknights as needed beyond regularly scheduled hours up to (30) hours per week
- Perform related duties based on departmental need
Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of CAD software (Rhino/AutoCad/Illustrator/Etc.)
- Proficient in use of Microsoft Office Suite/MS Teams/Outlook
- Minimum (1) year experience operating CNC Router Mills
- Minimum (1) year experience with Bambu 3D printing equipment and related software
- Minimum (1) year experience with CNC laser cutting equipment and related software (Universal laser systems preferred)
- Woodworking experience (table saws/band saws/jointer/planer/sanders/power tools) preferred but not required
- Metalworking experience (welding/cutting/bending/finishing) preferred but not required
- Experience in an Academic setting preferred
Other Requirements:
- Must be comfortable wearing appropriate respiratory equipment for work in an environment where dust and fumes are present, along with any other required PPE (face shields/goggles/protective clothing/hearing protection/etc.)
- Must possess ability to safely perform the physical work required of all duties, including manual dexterity, agility, strength, and coordination
- Frequently: stand, walk, bend, reach above shoulder level, use of keyboard/mouse, moderate to heavy unassisted lifting (up to 50 lbs.) heavy assisted lifting (more than 50 lbs.); hand dexterity, hand twisting, simple grasping, moderate to heavy assisted & unassisted pushing/pulling; assisting with relocation of machinery, exposure to outdoor work environments
- Occasionally: sit, crouch/squat, climb, power grasping
- Deliver excellent student service and maintain clarity and composure when faced with difficult situations
